How to help my sour horse?
I've had my horse for about 2 months now and not long after i got her she started this thing where she decides she doesnt want to work at the beginning of our session. At first we thought it was tack or back problem had both of those checked out and am sure its not either of those things. I notice it mostly when we've been working in the same ring (we have 3 arenas) for 2 to 3 days in row which is why i think she has some kind of vendetta against that ring. But whenever and wherever she does it this is what happens.... she tries to stop at the gate no matter what we are doing and if you squeeze or kick she stops dead like shes mad then when you smack her on the rump with the crop she bucks then moves forward. I always make sure that I come out winning the battle but sometimes it takes 10 to 15 minutes to win it because she will keep on doing it until I smack her pretty hard with the whip and say "Move On"! My trainer got on her and fought her and got her working in like 5 minutes and once shes past it she loves to go to work, its so weird... so we think shes just doing it to see what she can get away with...my problem is that we only work about 25 to 30 minutes in each session and we spend 10 to 15 working out the sourness and jitters, is there anyway i can get her to stop doing this or at least cut the fight time in half, any ideas? (this horse is an absolute pleasure to ride when she is being good)|||You are doing good with her. It is very imporant that you dont let her ever get her way. U may also try getting off of her walking her in the arena and lunging her in there either way she has to work. REWARD her as soon as she goes. She will eventauly stop doing that she may have gotten her way with her past owners. She will stop in a few more times. The thing you have to rember with horses esp sour horses is PATIENCE!|||U will get throu it just dont give up! shes sounds like a great horse. Time will tell! U can do it!

Open gate, walk horse with you on the ground beside horse walking through gate. Coach horse with pleasant voice when you get horse to walk through the gate with you at her side. (Not on top of her).
When she does what you ask pet the horse and reward with treat. Repeat several times a week. Keep it up through out the year. Soon horse will understand what you are asking and learn to trust you. Horses are like children, that can't talk you have to show them what you want. It's like sign language.|||As Parelli says, there is no thing as a sour horse, their just trying to tell you something. If you visit www.parelli.com and go to solve my problem, then have a read through the ones on napping etc, I found it soo interesting and helpful, and it just made sense!
It sounds like you need to play the 7 games with your horse so they know your the leader, so have a look on google for them aswell (parelli 7 games) and also sounds like she's bored in the school, so make it fun for her! Loads of polework, transitions, circles, only a lil bit of jumping as they get bored with that. Maybe some games etc.
Anything they enjoy. Take her in twice a week for a lovely groom, then turn her out again. She'll start to associate it with something pleasurable.
You don't say if she's good out hacking?
But it sounds to me that she's a lil bored and lost respect for you a bit (you won't get respect by smacking her, horses don't understand anger)

Keeping an old horse sane while on an incredibly long stall rest?
I have a 15 year old thoroughbred that ran for 10 years and was recently kicked by another horse fracturing his ulna. This is his first serious injury. The vet says he can possibly recover if.....he's on stall rest for 6 months then stall rest and light walking for another 6 months. Translation, keep a super high activity level horse on stall rest for a year without foundering or re-injuring himself. I am looking for ways to keep him busy. Vet says the pain will keep him down for around a month, we are only buting him for around 10 days as we want him to keep himself down and his pain tolerance is insane. (He was kicked then ran around the arena 3 times before being caught he also has twisted his ankle before and even though he limps slightly he won't stop running and bouncing around, he can barely walk but he tried to drag me and my dad around because he saw a small clump of green foxtails to eat.) I need help on keeping him down for the other 11. I am going to try a jolly ball and the uncle jim's hanging stall lick things. I'm looking into calming supplements but don't know where to start because we never use them and I want something that wont hurt him when used for extended periods of time. He has to have significant space between him and other horses as he's horse aggressive (thats how the kicking started our big horse decided he would test him.) I'm going to look into feeding him a different hay but we still have three weeks of college left so no one is home from 8am-10pm and we live in the middle of nowhere. I have seen jolly balls, hanging chews, hanging carrots/apples, mirrors and milk jugs. Any other ideas? I don't think those five things will keep him happy for 12 months(after 3-6 he will be able to go for walks), fortunately summer is near and my dad and I both have the summer off (thankfully he's a teacher.) The horse can walk about 50 feet or so a day on the lead, we live in AZ so zero grass but some green foxtails for now. He has a 12x12 breezeway stall will about a 14x12 outdoor he can go into so he can move around a little.
Thanks|||Grass hay 24/7, get a big hay rack and let him eat it free choice. You could probably stop feeding him a hard feed or switch him to a good equalizer just to make sure he gets his vitamin content. Taking him off feed will help to keep him a little more calm, but he'll get enough not to stress when the other horses are getting fed. Make sure to keep his stall super clean since he will be in it 24/7.

Start him on a calming supplement like Smart Calm Ultra (always had good luck with it). The pellets you can actually feed with no feed. My horses loved the taste of them.

Since he is being kept in a stall I would possibly add a stomach smoother to prevent ulcers like U-7 or SmartGut as well. Ulcers will keep him from settling. The hay 24/7 will help prevent that as well.

If toys don't occupy him and the supplement doesn't work, talk with your vet about Reserpine. It's been given for horses on extended stall rest as a sedative. I would try all your other options first, but this could be your solution. The other option is fluphenazine. I would try Reserpine first though.|||Just keep him busy!!! leave little treats around the paddock for him to find. Jolly balls are life savers. You can also find balls with holes in the middle sos you can put a treat in it. You could probably stop feeding him a hard feed or switch him to a good equalizer just to make sure he gets his vitamin content. Taking him off feed will help to keep him a little more calm, but he'll get enough not to stress when the other horses are getting fed. Make sure to keep his stall super clean since he will be in it 24/7.

Start him on a calming supplement like Smart Calm Ultra (always had good luck with it). The pellets you can actually feed with no feed. My horses loved the taste of them.

Since he is being kept in a stall I would possibly add a stomach smoother to prevent ulcers like U-7 or SmartGut as well. Ulcers will keep him from settling. The hay 24/7 will help prevent that as well.

If toys don't occupy him and the supplement doesn't work, talk with your vet about Reserpine. It's been given for horses on extended stall rest as a sedative. I would try all your other options first, but this could be your solution. The other option is fluphenazine. Choosing between two amazing horses?
So my riding instructor has been helping me find a horse, and she found two amazing 4 foot jumpers for the same price...
Horse 1: 16.1 hand thoroghbred, 6 years old. He's schooled to the foot, with the capability to go to 4. He is very sweet when riding, he didn't try anything bad when I rode him. He's very quiet and smooth, the thing is that he still has things to learn.
Horse 2: 15.3 and a half sporthorse (dam is a thoroughbred x welshcob and sire is a saddlebred) has done 4 foot before, 12 years old, HUGE mover. He wouldn't excel in hunter rounds, as his average stride length is 14 feet, so he can't make the small distances. If you don't take charge, he will. I can be schooling over smaller fences with him, and this has happened before to other riders, he will decide it's boring and try something higher, like the arena fence. I think that he could teach me more, but we could also get into more fights.
I ve been riding all my life and am training an Arab, and jumping my quarter horse 3 foot. I've ridden both of these horses, they're both amazing, im just havin troubles deciding if I want the better personality or the one who will teach me more. I'm looking for a horse to start high hunter and jumper with, but mostly jumper as my quarter horse is amazing in the hunter ring. Any advice would help. Thanks!|||I think number one. He would be more of your friend and you would be much more of a team than you would be with number two. So what if he doesn't know everything? You can teach him and create a strong bond between the two of you.|||Id say go with #1. You only had good things to say about this horse, and he's very young. He is bigger, he is younger, you don't have to fight him, you say. After the new wears off, a hard headed horse wears on you.|||I say horse #2 he is ready for the things you want to do and you can use him now. Some basic flat work and a break from schooling jumps should nip his pushiness in the bud. He sounds talented and workable for what you want now. The Thoroughbred is a big risk he maybe nice but he doesn't have the training and 2 years to finish him at 4 feet doesn't sound like it fits with your plan of competing in jumpers and high hunter. The 2nd horse for sure.|||It depends. You know number 2 can go 4ft. Number 1 has the "potential" which could be ruined at any time during his training. He's not finished so you're going to be spending a good 2 years properly building him up to added height before he's jumping 4ft unless you rush him.
Number 2 is finished in schooling and just sounds like he could use a few months off with some basic flat work to get him listening and collected to shorten his stride for the shorter courses. Within a few months of getting with him you could be jumping the 4ft with him.
So that is what it depends on. Do you want to be jumping 4ft now or 4ft in 2 years?|||kk
Horse 1: 16.1 hand thoroghbred, 6 years old. He's schooled to the foot, with the capability to go to 4. He is very sweet when riding, he didn't try anything bad when I rode him. He's very quiet and smooth, the thing is that he still has things to learn.
