Mental health professionals: Am I a little off mentally? (see details)?

I am a 37-year-old female. My mom, her mom, and her grandfather all had bipolar disorder, and her grandmother had clinical depression. I heard bipolar disorder runs in the family, but can it skip generations?

One of my best friends who has been a mental health counselor for nearly 30 years told me that I have obsessive-compulsive tendencies, but that I'm definitely not bipolar, yet several online assessments have indicated mild bipolar type II.

What do you think, based on my symptoms below? (Please: serious answers only)

1) I am very shy at work parties and family gatherings, but I feel comfortable in crowded casinos, malls, and arenas.

2) I am afraid of losing my friends, i.e., afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing.

3) One week before my period, I get very paranoid that I will be fired from work (which is illogical since I'm the only one there that knows how to do my particular job). This includes being afraid people will report me for wrong voice tone when saying "Hi", etc. I also turn off the phone at work because the ringer at "Low" makes me jump.

4) Also about one week before my period, I get severe insomnia.

5) I tend to worry about things to the point of it making me upset (but sometimes this can be quelled somewhat with husband's support and encouragement)

Other than those symptoms, I function fine: I drive, I work, I play the piano. I am also epileptic and me and my husband have no children (our personal choice)|||All of this is normal... The period stuff is odd, especially about work, HOWEVER, that may be because your hormones are out of whack. You may want to go to a doctor to see if your estrogen levels are crazy.

Other than that, the friend thing is normal, because people have abandonment issues.

I would say over all you are fine. DO go to the doctor though about hormone levels.

Keep in mind, you are acknowledging ALL of this. Which means that you are KNOW you do it....that means you can modify this behavior on your own.|||i think you might have some kind of hormone problem if you have noticed everything in your symptoms revolves around your cycle...go see an endocrinologist (doctor who specializes in the endocrine system (you know hormones) )
